What is the Best Base for my spa?

Hydropol 670

If you’re buying a spa, it must sit somewhere. But where? On a concrete pad, on pavers? Can you put it on your deck?

These are all common questions that need to be addressed by anyone looking to buy a spa. They are all a normal part of the process when considering a spa. We see all kinds: Some customers want to understand everything, others just want you to “take care of it,” while most are in-between. But all customers are aware that installing a spa takes a little bit of work. We deal with these kinds of questions frequently, and we know that what people generally want is a spa that doesn’t just work on Day 1, but that last for years to come.

Each spa manufacturer recommends a different approach based on how their product is constructed. So we highly recommend you have a look at the installation guide of the specific model you’re buying before you commit to buying any spa.

In this article, we’re going to go through the choices you face when choosing a base for your spa, and suggest what you could do, with the pros and cons of each choice explained.

Why is it important to have a strong, solid and level spa base?

Your spa is filled with a significant amount of water, and water is heavy, a gallon weighs 8.3. pounds, or 1 kilo per liter. Water is dense making it heavy, meaning a strong spa base is essential for a long lasting spa, and avoiding issues with structure or acrylic.

If a the average four-person spa holds around 300 gallons, and a gallon weighs 8.3 pounds, you’re looking at nearly 2500 pounds with the water alone. Add up to another thousand pounds for the spa itself and the weight of all those using the spa, the base has to be solid because it's got a lot of holding up to do.

Most of the weight of the spa is pushing straight down, due to gravity, of course. And if there’s a spot that isn’t flat, then it will be weaker than the rest. What do you think is going to happen in that case? All the pressure is going to get to it over time, and you’re going to end up with an issue. If the surface isn’t completely flat, your frame won’t be sitting square and again, over time, it can shift or warp and lead to structural damages and even acrylic damages.

Can a spa sit directly on the ground?

inflatable spa

Since you need a strong, solid and level surface this is not recommended unless you have an inflatable spa. The advantage to these it they don't have a solid structure they can sit directly on the ground and it will handle the imperfections of the ground.

Do I need a concrete base for your spa?

The majority of people buy acrylic spas, these require more planning for the base.

Coast Spa

It has been the industry standard for years and it still is the best method of supporting your tub: A concrete pad is best because it is the flattest and the strongest. It costs at least $1500-$2500 in all, because unless you’re fairly handy it also involves hiring a contractor. Even if you are handy, it requires buying and pouring cement, then making sure it is nicely level when it hardens, which can be difficult. It is recommended to hire an experienced contractor for your concrete base.

This is the best foundation you can sit your spa on, though it often requires more planning and bigger budget it is the best you can offer your spa. Are there other good options out there, maybe less costly ones? Of course there are.

Can UNI-stone make for a good spa base?

It sure can. UNI-Stone is a popular choice for its beautiful look that is available in an endless amount of styles, sizes, colors and even thickness. Just like a concrete base, UNI-stone often requires a contractor who is accustomed with installing it. It requires digging to proper depth to prepare the base of gravel and rock dust for the UNI-Stone. The depth needed will depend on the type of ground you have, what will be placed on the UNI-Stone and type of UNI-Stone used. It must be solid and level, just like any type of spa base. This being the reason we recommend a contractor who specializes in UN-stone.

Can I put my spa on a deck?

This is a less common choice for a spa base. It can be done, but there is a lot of planning involved when it comes to the structural integrity of the base. As mentioned, spas are heavy, if a deck is not properly constructed to support the weight of the spa you will eventually seeing bowing, and even possible breaking of the deck. Though if done well it can be a great option for those with large deck and who want to spa close to their door.

This is the lowest costing spa base you can choose. Patio stones are less than $5 each and available at all hardware stores. To use patio stones your base your will need to make a level and compacted base to place them on. To ensure your spa doesn't move with time and cause damages to the structure. You can buy everything needed at the hardware store. For compacting the rock dust base that your patio stones will be seated on, you can rent a compacter at your local equipment rental store.

How do I know what will work as a base for my hot tub?

It all comes down to what type of setup or look you're going for and of course how much you want to invest when it comes to your total spa project. If you're unsure which direction to go in it's always a good idea to consult with your spa professional, they will know what type of base is required under the manufacturers warranty and can guide you in choosing what is best for you.
